Scaffolders are now earning a higher annual salary than architects. On average, a scaffolder earns £40,942 a year, while a universityeducated architect typically earns £38,228. This means that even tradespeople, such as plasterers, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians, are making more money than architects.

It has been found that in London, the highest reported annual salary for a bricklayer is £90,000 a year far higher than the average wage of other professions such as teachers, veterinarians, nurses, and accountants.

These findings are likely to encourage more young people to enter the construction industry and start a career through a paid apprenticeship, rather than taking on large amounts of debt via a degree.

The UK construction industry is a lucrative career choice, with average wages for tradespeople such as site managers and scaffolders reaching up to £90,000 a year in London. In comparison, the average university graduate in England earns £32,000 a year, and is often left with a debt of £50,800.

Apprentices, on the other hand, finish their training debtfree. Nationally, a site manager earns £51,266 a year, while a scaffolder earns £40,942 and a roofer or bricky earns £42,000. Midwives earn less than £36,188 annually.
